About Azerbaijan

Introduction

Azerbaijan (Listeni/ˌæzərbˈɑːn/ az-ər-by-jahnAzerbaijaniAzərbaycan), is a region consisting of an independent country officially named as "Republic of Azerbaijan" and also north-west provinces of Iran. Azerbaijanis named these two regions as "North Azerbaijan" and "South Azerbaijan". Also, there are Azerbaijani ethnicity people living in the other regions of Iran and Turkey.

The "North-Azerbaijan" involving contiguous transcontinental country in the Caucasus region, situated at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west and Iran to the south. The exclave of Nakhchivan is bounded by Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, while having a short borderline with Turkey to the northwest.

The "South-Azerbaijan" is home of population of Azerbaijanis spread over the four provinces within the border of Iran. Iranian Azerbaijanis are mainly found in the Azerbaijan region included (East AzerbaijanArdabilZanjan,West Azerbaijan) and in smaller numbers, in other provinces such as KurdistanQazvin,HamadanGilanMarkazi and Kermanshah. Iranian Azerbaijanis also constitute a significant minority inTehranKaraj and other regions.

The Araz river separate Azerbaijani region to Northern (Republic of Azerbaijan) and Southern (Iran).

Although the terms "South-Azerbaijan" and "North-Azerbaijan" created many political disputes, Azerbaijanis themselves calls their brothers and sisters in the other side as North-Azerbaijanis and South-Azerbaijanis.
